» Book Review: The Selection - Kiera Cass

Title: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Series: The Selection #1
Genre: Young Adult, (Dystopian), Romance
Pages: 327
Published: April 24th 2012 by Harper Collins USA
My Rating:

Summary:
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Quick summary of my thoughts: I was hooked from early beginning to the very end. I had NO idea that I would like it as much as I did (do). I loved this book. Such a fun, cute and fangirl-ish read. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to read the other books!

The review can be a little messy because of feelings.. and fangirling here and there. Be prepared :) (It does not contain spoilers)

THOUGHTS:
I truly liked the Selection as a whole, even though I would change a few things that I didn't like as much as, eh.. other things. And I love the concept of this book, I really do!! Such an interesting story to me, and Prince Maxon is pretty hot.

The beginning of the book was a little blurry to me. I thought it went on too fast. But at the same time I really liked that the book was fast-paced and such a easy read. The only thing I liked though, about the first part of the book (before the Selection), was the moments with Aspen, so I didn't mind the too-fast-paced beginning that much.. It was okay, because it lead to Maxon ;)

Me, like, lets say, all the time with Maxon around.
As I mentioned in my summary up there, I did not expect that I would love the book this much. I thought about it as a cheesy love story (...a really bad love story. So stupid of me), which is a completely different thing from what I read. It was fun, so cute but still action filled and I loved it. While reading this book I lived in the castle, I felt what America felt. It was amazing. Just as I like it to be when I read a romantic book.

Now to the characters.. at first I liked Aspen a lot, I still liked him. And I had this feeling/theory thing that he would appear later in the book.. and yeah, you know what happens. And after that I still like him. But I don't want to like him. Because I love Maxon :(

Maxon, I volunteer as tribute...
America is all okay in my oppinion. I love her personality. She's so nice and she cares so much about the people she love. I love that about her. I love America's relationships with her sister, father and the maids :) I actually enjoyed reading about Celeste even though I HATE/D her, so. much. She's so mean and ugh, I can't handle her.

Maxon, on the other hand, is my favorite character. And yes, I lovelovelove him. He's so nice and cute towards America and I'm dying inside. I found myself smiling like a total moron while reading parts like: "Yes, Maxon," I whispered. "It's possible." while doing something like this . You probably understand.

The Selection brought out my inner fangirl.
This is me right now, after reading the book.
Kiera Cass' writing style was as I said very easy to read. It really was a face-paced book. I read it almost to fast, in one day I think. But if I like a book I like to read it quick, just because. I can't wait to read The Elite, and then The One. And then The Heir! So excited for the new book to come out. I think there will be two or three??

If you enjoy reading a cute love story at the same time as an action-kind-of story, this is the right book for you!

Book Haul #2

Three days later and my books are here. I'm so excited to show you the five books that I bought...
..Here they are. My new books. So pretty :)
I think I might (just might) need to ban myself from buying more books, at least for the rest of October. That shouldn't be such a big problem. But for now, I'm so happy about my new books :) I haven't read the previous books in TMI yet (except CoB. In swedish though..) and I don't own them either, but CoHF was very cheap so yeah, I own it now. And I've read so many positive reviews of The Selection so I just had to buy it. I'm very happy that I did! :)

1. The Selection Boxed Set by Kiera Cass - Buy here | Köp här (cdon)
2. City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare - Buy here | Köp här (cdon)

Have you read these? Did you enjoy them?

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

I got nominated by Carole's Random Life to do this award! Thank you so much :)

Of course, there are rules...
1) Thank the blogger that nominated you, and link back to their site.
2) Post the award's logo on your blog.
3) Answer the 10 questions that you have been asked.
4) Nominate 10 other bloggers and ask them 10 questions.

Carole's questions and my answers:
1. What is your favorite book?
Hmm.. this is a really hard question. I think I'll have to say 3 books. Obsidian, the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and Anna and the French Kiss.

2. Approximately how many books do you currently own?
I currently own around 100 books!

3. Do you enjoy re-reading books?
I have never re-read a book actually. So no, I don't enjoy re-reading my books :)

4. What is the worst book that you ever read?
I would have to say Vampire Diaries. I had to high expectations because of the tv-show. I did not like the book at all.

5. When you are not enjoying a book do you stop reading or do you feel the need to finish it no matter what?
It depends on the book. But most of the time I stop reading it and when I feel for it I continue reading it (if it's a good book of course!)

6. Do you feel like you must read the book before seeing the movie?
Sometimes :)

7. Do you like to watch TV? What is your favorite show?
I LOVE IT! I have a few favorites.. Lost, Prison Break, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Revenge and Outlander. Yup. I love them all so much!

8. Do you like to read several books at the same time?
No. Or I don't know. I have never read several books at the same time. I always finish a book before starting a new one. Most of the time.

9. Who is your favorite author?
This is also a hard question. I love Jennifer L. Armentrout, Michelle Hodkin, Stephanie Perkins, Veronica Roth and John Green. So yeah. It's hard to decide just one.

10. Approximately how many books do you read every year?
I started to read "for real" this year. And I have currently read 26 (?) books, I think. My goal was to read 50 books but I needed to change it to 40 because lack of time. I don't think I will finish that goal either though. It's so sad :(

I nominate:
1. Agnes and Frida at Booklovin
2. Izzy at The Reading Izzy
3. Lena C
4. Min Bokkista
5. Johanna at Böcker med Johanna
6. Alicia at Abooks
7. Petra at Petras Bokblogg
8. Sophia at BookBird
9. Emma at Emmas Böcker
10. Pia at Bookrelated

My questions to you:
1. Name some of your book boyfriends.
2. Favorite book series?
3. Which is your favorite "book to movie/tv-show" adaptation?
4. Where do you buy your books?
5. Favorite stand alone?
6. Favorite cover?
7. Do you like paperbacks/hardbacks or e-books the most?
8. How many TBR-books do you currently have on your bookshelf?
9. How do you organize your books on your shelf?
10. When did you start to buy/collect books?

Thanks again for the nomination, Carole!

» Book Review: Onyx - Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Onyx
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Lux #3
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Pages: 366
Published: August 14th 2012 by Entangled Teen
My Rating:

Summary:
Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…
Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.
Something worse than the Arum has come to town…
The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard. But then everything changes…
I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me? No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

Quick summary of my thoughts: If you have read Obsidian and loved it, you know how gripping this series is. This was a perfect sequel to the first book. It contained everything I looked for at that time. Romance, mystery, action and so on. I loved both Daemon and Katy in this book, although Katy can be a little bit to stubborn at some points.. Yet, I truly enjoyed Onyx while reading it!

*THE REVIEW CONTAINS NO SPOILERS*

My Review:
I had a hard time finishing this one. Not because of the book but because of my still existing reading slump. But when I got into my "reading flow" at the end of the book I could finally finish it.

I enjoyed lots of moments in Onyx. LOTS OF. There was several fangirl moments whenever Daemon and Katy where together. More moments when we got to see a more loving-and-caring-side of Daemon, which I totally loved by the way, and I few less exciting moments whenever "some real identities" showed up.

I really liked that Katy got more involved in the things happening around and that she got the chance to show what she's actually made of. Against the Arum, the DOD.. and certain different people. She took for once something in her own hands, which is bad if you think about what happens, but still. It's some kind of development.

I love the action in this one! A LOT. So many intense and crazy things happened all the time. It makes you, me anyway, very addictive, which is one of the things that made me love this series.

What I didn't like was that Dee was absent like throughout the whole book. In Obsidian she was one of the main characters and now, all of a sudden she's gone (or maybe, I don't know..? Kissing her boyfriend?). The same thing with her mother. Or even, her old life.. It's development which probably means something for the rest of the books so I don't mind that much. Overall, I really loved this book!

I recommend this to everyone. Especially teens/young adults who love aliens.. and a hot male character *wink*.
You should really read the LUX series!

Thoughts on Outlander (TV Series 2014)

Okay, so I finally decided to start watching Outlander the other day and a not so long story short, I LOVED it. It was freaking amazing in my oppinion and I cannot wait until next year for more episodes!
Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate relationship is ignited that tears Claire's heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. - Written by Starz
Stars: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Graham McTavish
Genre: Drama | Romance | Sci-Fi
Websites: Official website | IMDb | OMG, it's a book! Click here to buy it! |

Claire Randall is mysteriously swept back 200 years in time.
This show surprised me in an extremely good way. I finished the 9 episodes in one afternoon and now I can't get enough. The story is absolutely fantastic, the characters are great (at least some of them..) and Scotland is just lovely! I have been waiting for a tv-show that contains time traveling so this is perfect for me.

I have a favorite character already. Guess who? Jamie of course. He is so kind and charming and perfect and his accent is so cute. I would change place with Claire any second and live in Scotland year 1743 with Jamie. No regrets.

Claire Randall is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a romantic young Scottish warrior.
A few "flaws" are coming here (nothing big). I really need Claire to tell someone her secrets. I can't stand it. It's not exactly a flaw but I just can't wait for it to happen. Another thing I can't wait for, even if it might won't happen, is that Frank also travels back in time... Just think about all the possible drama!

Even though I don't like him so much, Frank I mean, I still feel sorry for him. I want him to find Claire but I don't want them to be together. You feel me? Claire and Jamie are perfect for each other! Another OTP is now added to my list :)

I really recommend this TV-show! Watch it!
For all of you who like drama, romance and time traveling!

October TBR

TBR's aren't really my thing, unfortunately. I don't like to force myself to read specific books, but this month I'll try to read at least these three (school you know..). Hopefully I'll finish all of them, but it will, for sure, take time. I would love to read a few creepy books before and during Halloween, but I'm afraid I don't own anything in that genre. Maybe it's time for me to buy some spooky books? :)

1. Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
2. Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout (I've got around 100 pages left)
3. Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi

Do you have a TBR for October? Anything exciting? :)

About

Updated 2015-09-13

Hello there! I am Filippa, a 17-year-old book lover and fangirl from Sweden. I'm currently studying my second year in "high school", year 11 out of 12, on the Natural Science programme (focus on math, biology, chemistry and physics) in my very small hometown in Sweden. I adore reading as well as blogging and watching tv-shows. I would also call myself adventurous and I'm very curious of the world, which I, in the future wish to travel all around :)

Some of my favorite authors are Jennifer L. Armentrout, Michelle Hodkin, Tahereh Mafi and Stephanie Perkins

Four books I recently gave 5/5 stars
  • The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
  • The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski
  • Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins
  • Cinder by Marissa Meyer

I decided, about a year ago, to start a blog in English and it led me here. I started Countless Books in October 2014 and I couldn't be happier. I have been book blogging for 2-3 years maybe? I'm not so sure, but I love it :) I am very proud of my blog Countless Books and I hope you like it as much as I do. If you want me to change something or add something, please tell me :) I just want CB to be as good as it can possibly be.

I've made the layout/blog design myself!
